Francesco Cavalli stands as the most influential opera composer of the 17th century. Celebrated throughout Europe during his lifetime, he played a decisive role in transforming opera from its early Venetian origins into a mature public art form. More than 40 operas are attributed to him, 26 of which survive complete, offering a unique insight into the genre’s remarkable development. His international reputation culminated in 1660, when Louis XIV invited him to Paris to compose L’Ercole amante for the royal wedding.
Cavalli’s artistic identity, however, extended beyond the opera house. As maestro di cappella of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice, he also composed sacred music of exceptional quality. Whether writing for the theatre or the liturgy, he brought the same sensitivity to text, melodic richness, and dramatic expressiveness, revealing two complementary facets of a single artistic vision.
This programme presents both dimensions of Cavalli’s art. Arias from eight of his operas are interwoven with the sacred motets “O bone Jesu” and “In virtute tua”, whose more intimate character is shaped by the liturgical and acoustic world of San Marco.
The vocal works are complemented by instrumental sonatas of Dario Castello, one of the leading musicians of San Marco. Their virtuosic brilliance and expressive freedom illuminate the vibrant musical culture of seventeenth-century Venice, where vocal and instrumental styles constantly inspired one another.
Together, these works portray Cavalli not only as a master of the operatic stage, but also as one of the defining musical voices of Baroque Venice, seamlessly uniting the sacred and the theatrical, the intimate and the spectacular.

The Vilnius-based early music ensemble Canto Fiorito, directed by cornetto and recorder player Rodrigo Calveyra, was founded in 2013. The ensemble is dedicated to the research and performance of Renaissance and Baroque music.
The most active early music ensemble of Lithuania, Canto Fiorito has performed at numerous European festivals, including Mars en Baroque (Marseille), Stockholm Early Music Festival, Brighton Early Music Festival, Namur Music Festival, Musiq’3 Festival (Brussels), Glasperlenspiel Festival (Tallinn), Jeunesse Festival (Vienna), Riga Bach Chamber Music Festival, NoMeMus Festival (Sweden), Via Mediaeval (Germany), and Pordenone Sacred Music Festival. The ensemble has also given concerts in Norway, Austria, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Poland, and Estonia.
Its repertoire places special emphasis on musical life in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th–17th centuries. It also includes operas conducted by Calveyra, such as Handel’s “Alcina” and “Giulio Cesare”, and Alessandro Stradella’s “La Circe”. In 2026, Canto Fiorito presents the contemporary world premiere of Giovanni Paolo Colonna’s “Messa a più cori”.
The ensemble’s discography includes “Deus Deus Meus” (2015, Semplice), “Barbara Strozzi: La voce sola” (2021, Brilliant Classics), and “From Rome to Vilnius” (2024, Brilliant Classics). In 2027 a new album will be released: “Rosa Giacinta Badalla. O quali incendio”, featuring many world recording premieres.
In 2017, Calveyra founded the Kretinga International Early Music Festival, dedicated to Lithuania’s oldest organ (1680) and offering free concerts by leading early music artists. The soloist of the ensemble, mezzo-soprano Renata Dubinskaitė, is also the assistant to the artistic director and the manager of the ensemble as well as of the Kretinga Early Music Festival.
